Unusually, we ventured out to Lincolnshire and stayed at Aswarby at a very comfortable pub as a centre for walking the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Attractive countryside, undemanding for walkers.

Rooms in a separate block in The Tally Ho make for comfortable nights.

Our most significant experience here was driving out of the Tally Ho car park and noticing a dark blue BMW rolling towards us on its roof. Misjudging and overcompensating for a corner with a soft verge the car spun, turned over and rolled, ending upside down in a ditch alongside us. Tim, driving, could only slow down and stop as the BMW slid up to its bottom in the - fortunately dry - ditch. I ran to it, stopping at the point when I realised the steam rising from the exhaust could be petrol fumes. The driver made a miraculous escape from the only door left unjammed by the ditch sides, striding over his car to my outstretched hand. His first act was to phone his hockey team to suggest they might have to do without him this morning ....

So be warned - the long straight roads with deep ditches and rivers are dangerous for drivers.

Apart from that, good walking, rather misty, and interesting sights like Mrs Smith's house (National Trust). We enjoyed the Tally Ho which, not entirely unrelatedly, later won an award for pub of the year.
