Introduction

Bollywood spreads Queen's Hinglish

This was the title of an article in The Times of April 26th 2004.

The article suggested that a hybrid Indian English had been developed by the film industry in "Bollywood" in order to appeal to young Indian people living abroad.

This hybrid could affect general English, claimed unnamed "experts."

Examples offered were:

gora white person
chuddies underpants
angrez English person
badmash bad or dishonest

Some of these terms have reached a non-Indian audience through television programmes such as The Kumars at no 42 and Goodness Gracious Me.
