It is routine for
an English teacher to use a filmed version of a novel or play alongside
the written text. Often this porovokes discussion on the differences
between the two treatments. It is this study of interpretation where
therre is scope for improvement by using digital film.
The possibility
of embedding extra information on DVDs opens up interesting possibilities
for extending the conections between the media. Existing CD ROMs use
clips of interviews with actors discussing their interpretations, with
the director, plus historical background, textual commentaries etc.
Digital film is
more adaptable than the linear videotape which opens up a greater flexibility
in the classroom and the possibility of individual viewings of a film
as pupils take their own route through a non-linear narrative.
