Improving Media Literacy

How we can get things moving

Implementation

Models of implementation of change in the curriculum already exist, and it would be wise to learn from them.

• TVEI - the Technical and Vocational Educational Initiative was a government funded movement which provide funds for computers in schools, training on their use and their integration into the curriculum and an emphasis on flexible learning methods. It resulted in a wave of computers which created a logjam when initial funds were not followed up by funds for their replacement. It took innovative practitioners from classrooms and gave them an exciting project to enthuse other teachers, acting as an available resource for teachers wanting help. It provided the grounding for computer use in English schools.

• Laptops for Teachers (evaluation here) is already providing the tools for the job for teachers who need practice in using ICT in the workplace. This has certainly increased the confidence of users.

• Broadband Initiatives - using the broadband network to share educational resources and promote good practice between teachers. Locally The Eastern Region organisation is E2BN whose site hosts examples of schools using Broadband, often including digital film, to enhance teaching and learning.

• New Opportunities Funded ICT Training - an expensive and well-intentioned scheme to train teachers, this foundered on the difficulties of providing national training resources for individual teachers and because tired teachers had to provide their own time in which to train. The scheme did train many teachers but was not always considered a great success by teachers themselves. Official details here.

• BECTA are already involved in this area and their project is evaluated here. They also have an online discussion group, presented awards to most creative films, and produced a CD containing examples of good practice. Partly from this came the Pathé news archive which has been made available copyright free to schools and is being used in E2BN work.

• The BFI provide training and learning materials and were involved in evaluating the BECTA pilot (above)

• It would also be well worth conferring with organisations such as Fim Education and the British Film Institute who have views on what has worked for them.
