Improving Media Literacy

How we can get things moving

Communication

Communication skills are an essential part of the National Curriculum and in different ways suffuse every subject.

English is the most obvious, but not by any means the only, avenue of delivery.

Communication by language, through literature, by the mass media, by images still and moving is a topic dealt with in depth by A level courses in English Language and Sociology as well as specific Film / Media courses. The expertise of these teachers can be harnessed to inform teaching elsewhere. Advertising, news, rhetoric and interpreting the effect of different media on a text are all topics which are dealt with within English lessons, Citizenship and elsewhere. All these topics address film in some way - though they may be unable to develop their full potential because of the limitations of video. There is real scope for well designed digital media to teach these topics more effectively.
