Television
advertisements can be seen as film in miniature. Advertising is already
an essential part of the English curriculum and it is not uncommon for
videoed advertisements to be used in the classroom to discuss how they
influence our ways of interpreting the world.
Digital video brings
the possibility of
• analysing scenes much more closely,
• creating parallel texts in which the clip and a commentary are
placed alongside each other
• students creating their own advertisements for public viewing,
together with their own commentaries describing their choice and decisions.
Advertisements stand
a better chance of being offered copyright free than feature films.
