Linking Language and Literature

(Closed text) Candidates answer one question from Section A and one from Section B.

Section A: comparison of a transcript of speech with a literary or non-literary extract.

Section B: continuation, recreative writing or transposition of set passage.

 4A2 2hrs 15%

Language in Literature: Drama

(Open Text) Candidates answer ONE question from Section A: Shakespeare, and ONE question from Section B: Twentieth Century Drama.

Each question will identify one aspect of the set text for discussion, and candidates must select two passages which they consider relevant, and which they can relate to the text as a whole.

Language in Literature: Poetry and Prose

(Open Text) Candidates answer ONE question from Section A: Poetry, and ONE question from Section B: Prose. At least one answer must be on a text published pre-1900.

Questions will be passage based: candidates will be required to offer close textual and linguistic comment on the passage, seen in the context of the text as a whole.

 5A2 Internal Assessment 15%

Issues in Language and Literature

Candidates present an extended study (max. 3000 words) within one of the following topic areas:

  • The Language of Protest
  • Language and Persuasion
  • Language and Gender
  • Language and Identities

Candidates must include the study of both literary and non-literary texts.

 3AS Internal Assessment15%

Styles of Writing

Candidates produce a folder (guideline 1500-2000 words) EITHER containing detailed analysis of related spoken, literary and non-literary texts OR containing two original pieces covering literary and non-literary writing and speech, with commentaries to support their own writing.

 6A2 2hrs 20%

Experience into Words

Candidates answer one compulsory question from each of Section A and Section B.

Section A: analysis of written monologue, to be related to wider reading.
Section B: transcript of spoken language to be adapted into monologue form, with commentary defining the literary and linguistic features of the two texts.
