Propaganda

Propaganda attempts to persuade, and it may share some of the features of the language of the law, of advertising and of rhetoric.

This example comes from North Korea and is a very obvious piece of persuasion to Western eyes. Look at the modifiers (the respected and beloved leader, dear leader ...) at the choice of emotional words (profound care, paternal love, mother, choked with tears of gratitude ...) and the omission of or euphemisms for the unpleasant aspects of war (temporary retreat, difficult war days, rain of shells and powder smoke, bereaved families of revolutionary martyrs ...). The whole tone is moralistic, showing a caring leader who will lead his people (darlings) to "enjoy a happy life" with "their political identity ... unblemished."

The Fatherly Leader Visits a Family of a People's Army Serviceman in a Village

One day In 1952, during the arduous Fatherland Liberation War, the respected and beloved leader Marshal Kim Il Sung visited the family of a People's Army serviceman.

In the period of the temporary retreat, the enemy had looted provisions and destroyed everything - even household furniture and bowls. In those difficult war days the Fatherly leader was deeply concerned to stabilize the life of the people, and took measures to preferentially provide the families of martyrs and the People's Army servicemen with food, clothes and other necessary goods

His care for them was profound. Though he was busy directing affairs both in the front and the rear taking the heavy burden of the war, the leader would find out time to call on those families. He called himself on them through the rain of shells and powder-smoke and took minute care of their life with paternal love.

The fatherly leader dropped in at a sailor's home and had a talk with the serviceman's mother and learned that she had a letter from her son in the navy. The respected and beloved leader read it through and told her that her son was brilliant and wrote admirably, and kindly asked her whether she sent the book he had wanted. She replied that she did not send it as she was unable to get it yet.

The leader thought of something for a while, then said that her boy must need such a book in the navy, so he would send him his own book. That was quite unexpected to her. "Oh, your own, dear leader?!" She could not say any more, choked with tears of gratitude.

The valuable book of the fatherly leader was thus sent to an ordinary sailor - the book carrying in every page his deep love for the People's Army men.

When the sailor got the valuable book sent from the respected and beloved reader, his heart burned with a firm determination to be whole-heartedly loyal to him and fight to the end as his revolutionary soldier along the road indicated by the great revolutionary leader Marshal Kim II Sung.

With such great solicitude and deep love of the fatherly leader Comrade Kim Il Sung, all the bereaved families of revolutionary martyrs and the families of the People's Army servicemen now enjoy a happy life with nothing more to envy In the world.

The leader is the real father of all heroic soldiers of this country, so they entrust their darlings to his care and fight through fire and water to preserve their political identity which will be unblemished forever even after their death.
